A-1 founder, Ernie Busnardo, was a true pioneer in the diving industry. Ernie’s burning desire to share the adventure of diving with others began when he and a “couple of buddies” took a 12-week scuba class in the mid 50’s. He was immediately “hooked” and he and his wife Violet opened A-1 a few years later. They never imagined their basement “dive shop” would become the largest and longest established dive store in Colorado and one of the most respected dive centers in the country.
His passion for diving mirrored his love of family and friends. Always quick with a smile and handshake, Ernie was a stranger to few. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing someone yell out…..ERNIE!! A real life rock star of a unique kind. He had an incredible memory for names and could recall them from decades ago on a whim. He loved broken things and the challenge of finding a way to get them fixed. He also enjoyed water-skiing and took pleasure in dazzling spectators with his one-legged rope maneuver where he’d ski behind the boat while holding on the rope with his foot on an extended leg. Yes, the rock star and a hotshot!
Often referred to as the “grandfather of diving in Colorado” this pioneer will be missed. We are truly blessed to have known him and reap the joy, pleasure and excitement he passed on to so many………………scuba diving!
Rest well Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Fellow Diver…Friend.
