With memories cards nowadays, you can find cards as big as 8GB and 10GB. That size is enough to last you an entire trip if you don’t always shoot on the “fine” setting. However, most professional underwater photography experts will say it is not a good idea to have all your pictures on one card, especially with underwater photography. Using a different card every couple of days or even every day ensures that you will have pictures if you unfortunately flood your camera on a dive. Sometimes with a flooded camera the pictures on the card can be salvaged but only if it is a minor flood. Remember, flooding the camera isn’t a matter of “if” but a matter of “when”. Protect your memories the best you can.

Side Note: Make sure to always format your new card before you use it. Some cameras will not save pictures on a card that is not formatted.

Our A-1 Group just returned from an incredible trip of touring and diving in Thailand. Fun and adventure was had by all, including a visit to the floating market, the famous reclining Buddah and the magnificent temples of Bangkok. Next stop was Chiang Mai arriving on the Thai New Year for the Water Festival celebration. What that means is you better be prepared to be drenched with water from sun up to sun down. The locals were ready to drench you with buckets, coolers and massive squirt guns or anything that would hold water as they rode up and down the streets in the back of their pick-up trucks ready to give you a good soaking.

Other highlights were visiting the Temple on the Hill in Chiang Mai, the elephant training camp to ride the Asian elephants to the hill tribe village, finishing the day with petting adult tigers and a two month old baby tiger.

We were then on our way to Phuket to board our diving vessel for a week on the Oriental Siren. Wow! What a beautiful ship with polished wood interior, open air dining and the largest rooms of any dive vessel we have ever been on.

The diving was mesmerizing with beautiful soft corals, more anemones and clown fish than you can imagine, mating cuddle fish, sea horses, a leopard shark, encounters with giant manta-rays and an awesome wreck dive.

It was a wonderful trip and oh, by the way, lots of souvenirs were purchased along the way. From jewelry to clothing and everything in between. The night bazaars were a lot of fun.

The best part was all the new friendships we made and the lasting memories!

Q-tips, good or bad?

Many divers choose to use a Q-tip to aid in cleaning or prepping their camera system. It’s a very tempting “tool” that seems as though it can cause little harm, I mean, how can it right? Well in reality a Q-Tip can leave behind many small hard to see strands of fibers. These fibers may get trapped in the o-ring groove or even attach themselves to the o-ring. When this happens, the possibility of flooding your camera system just became very likely.

Better Alternatives

Eye shadow applicators: These resemble a Q-tip but rather than loose spun fibers, they have a soft spongy rounded tip. They work great for reaching the o-ring groove that is difficult to fully clean and are great at absorbing small drops of water in that same groove area.

Make-up or foundation sponge: These usually come packaged with 8-10 sponges and can be round, square or triangular. They are ideal for cleaning the o-ring areas and very soft. They are usually white in color so it’s easy to see if they become dirty. Using them is simple and effective.

Both the items listed are easy to find and inexpensive. Look in the make-up section of your local drug store.
